Making of Largest LEGO Mosaic (Multiple Panels) as a Guinness World Record
My journey of attempting to create a Guinness World Record using over 7,38,000 LEGO Bricks in a span of one month, and succeeding.
How it started
It all started with LEGO India team reaching out to me for creating a 'mindblowing' installation for their upcoming Mumbai store.
I jumped at the word 'mindblowing', because I knew this was my chance to do something big.
The Designing Journey
The designing part was hardest. I had figured that I shall be making the cube on 5 sides, but each side had to look different from each other.
So I went to my earliest memories of Mumbai as a college kid - beaches, movies, skyline, flights, and rains.
I also wanted to include the minfigures, and make them look very Mumbai.
Bringing it all Together
I never knew that managing 7.38 Lakh pieces would be one of the most challenging part. Spread across 40 colors, and just 9 shades of blue, it definitely required lot more attention than I expected.
The crucial part was not let the colors mix at any point.
The Making
It took 100+ volunteers joining me across 3 days to be able to build the 720 base plates that we worked on.
The importance was laid on accuracy rather than speed, which helped us in lesser time to verify.
The Installation
The installation spanned across 20+ hours amidst the chaotic Mumbai rains. It took us a team of 5 people to put all of it together, often climbing heights to assemble with accuracy.
At the end, it was all worth it. When we saw the cube rotating for the first time, the efforts felt fruitful.
The next day was adjudication by Guinness team, and the launch.
Guinness Journey
The Guinness process was full of anxiety, because until the very last moment, we were unsure if our efforts will get us the record.
The adjudication process involving surveyors and witnesses went on for 90 minutes before we were finally given the results out.
